  • Overview

    The Medication Access Specialist is a position residing in the Pharmacy Department, under the guidance of the Medication Access Team (MAT) Program Leader. This position is responsible for completing the necessary functions to improve patient access to medications. The Medication Access Specialist will be primarily responsible for the following tasks: actively reviewing and verifying patients’ drug benefit information to ensure reimbursement requirements are met, processing test claims for medications, conducting third party prior authorization requests, educating patients SLHS retail pharmacy services,  identifying opportunities for improving reimbursement from payers, documentation of activities on all applicable software platforms including the electronic health record, and obtaining accurate patient medication histories. The position will work with pharmacists, social workers, patient financial assistance, prior authorization team, care management team members, nurses, providers and other patient resources to identify and refer patients to the MAT.

     

    Required Criteria 

    • Education: Bachelor’s Degree required or 4 years equivalent experience in lieu of Bachelor’s Degree

    Preferred Skills

    • One (1) year experience as a pharmacy tech or completion of accredited pharmacy technician training program 
    • Three years of ambulatory pharmacy experience (medication reimbursement and healthcare insurance prior authorization experience)
